eyeOS Official Roadmap published

After some weeks of hard work determinating which new apps will be included in the next eyeOS big update(1.2.0.0), and organizing the eyeOS Developers Network, we're proud to announce the official eyeOS Roadmap, which determinates what will be included in eyeOS 1.2, the biggest eyeOS Release since 1.0, with new applications and improvements in actual applications, kernel, toolkit and desktop/design.

We have also published the eyeOS Release Policies, which explains when will a new eyeOS release come out, and determinates the timeline to present new projects to be included in the default branch of eyeOS.

The Wishlist wiki page and the Suggestions and Ideas is a very strong base to determinate important things to be implemented in future versions, don't stop sending ideas and suggestions!

eyeOS Project Status

eyeOS 1.0 introduced new technologies such as the first repository mantained packaging system in a web application, system that's currently used by large operating systems (specially Linux distributions) like Debian (with apt-get). It also introduced a new concept for developing new web applications, following the traditional applications schemes.

Three months after releasing it, here are some of the interesting things / statistics that have happened to the project since its 1.0 release.

eyeOS has been nominated as one of the 10 best projects at the SourceForge Community Choice Awards, between more than 156.000 projects.

There are more than 40 registered projects since the projects pages introduction, just 3 weeks ago. Some of them Will be included in the next major version.

eyeOS.info server (with eyeOS 1.x) has 90.037 users at the moment of writing this post. If we add to this the 122.446 users that were registered during the first 1,5 years of project in the public server (with eyeOS 0.x), we have that eyeOS.info server has been the web operating system server for 212.483 users. And that on just one server. It's impossible to calculate the number of people using eyeOS out there.

eyeOS has been downloaded 77.571 times. (Total downloads: about 170.000).

0 security bugs found from 1.0 release.

So it's time (again) to say thanks. Thanks to 77k people who have downloaded the published packages, to the 212k users who have registered into the public server, but specially, thanks to the whole development community, who is working in very different ways to move eyeOS into the next step.

We are, together, creating the next step in collaborative work for friends, family and professionals, and we're developing which we want to be the base of the future web applications, full connected between them, working on eyeOS, the Open Web Operating System.

What's coming on eyeOS 1.2, part III

After some weeks without continuing the posts about the eyeOS improvements that will be included in eyeOS 1.2, we can start them again with the new Multiple Uploads System and Automathing Image Thumbnails in eyeFiles:

In first place, the new eyeUpload (called eyeUploadX), developed by nanawel (who is also developing the great eyeFTP, first FTP app developed with eyeOS Toolkit).

The new eyeUploadX replaces eyeUpload when Flash v8 or later is installed in the browser (else the traditional eyeUpload is displayed), and allows multiple file uploads with a real time progress bar for each one:

In second place, the reloaded eyeFiles also includes automatic image thumbnails when the GD graphics library extension is detected in the server. The result is impressive:

New MicroServer version

Thanks to Björn Ahrens, who created and mantains the MicroServer pack, we're proud to announce a new MicroServer version, 0.6.2, with eyeOS 1.1.0.1.

The new version solves the bugs that have been appearing around microServer, like the upload bug. It also features a new installer with an "update" option, to update existent installs of eyeOS-microServer without loosing data.

eyeOS Projects List

Two weeks after being published, the eyeOS Projects List has grown a lot, having now more than 20 registered Projects.

The Projects List is thought to recopile all the projects (from a new app, to a system improvement/customization...) that are being created for eyeOS, so its developers can find new developers and designers to participate on the project. Once it's finished, it can be included in the Packages Center, in the eyeSoft repository or in eyeOS by default.

All the information for creating a new project and adding it to the list can be found in the Projects Information page, and all the available resources for eyeOS Developers can be found at the eyeOS Wiki.

The eyeOS Packages Center

We're proud to announce the new eyeOS Packages Center, which replaces the old eyeApps/eyeLook websites (which are linking now to the new Website).

In the new eyeOS PC, users will be able to download lots of packages for eyeOS (finished ones that can be also found on the stable repository trought eyeSoft, and unfinished/unstable ones that will be only there), and developers will be able to publish their packages.

If you have made an application, please send it now to the PC! Don't worry if it's are in early alpha/beta stage, you can update it when you want. And if you have a website for your application, you'll be able to link it from the package site, and if not, you can always start an eyeOS Wiki Page for your package.

You can see more instructions for sending a new package here.

We would love to see, in a future, to find an "eyeOS" section at the main software downloads sites out there, and this is the first step.

The new eyeOS Developers Reference Index

After some weeks of hard work, we're proud to present the Developers Reference Index, a page with the links to all reference pages for Widgets, Services, Librarires and more.

It's not finished (documentation should not end never!), but it has a great and solid base to work on, and a must-have-opened page while programming for eyeOS :-). Don't hesitate on improving any reference page with new examples, corrections or expandings!

Hope it will be useful for all eyeOS programmers out there.

Cograts, 7-zip!

Finally, the winner of the Sourceforge Community Choice Awards 2007 has been 7-zip, one of the best, most useful Open Source apps out there.

It's our obligation (and our desire, too!) to congrat the 7-zip Team for the great work they do, and for being the winner of the SF CCA 2007, where we have been "fighting" for the prize too.

And, of course, THANKS for all you who voted for eyeOS, being one of the 10 best Open Source projects in Sourceforge it's one of the best things that have happened to eyeOS. That's the Open Source spirit.

We hope we'll be fighting for the prize also in Sourceforge CCA 2008!

What's coming on eyeOS 1.2, part II

Continuing with the posts about new features and improvements of eyeOS 1.2, we would like to present a new app that will be present on eyeOS 1.2 and is already working on the experimental branch at the eyeOS public SVN: eyeMail!

eyeMail is a full email management system, capable of running multiple accounts at same time and comunicating with some other apps like eyeContacts to manage contacts.

Better than talking about it is showing it, so here you have a couple of screenshots taken from a browser (not GIMPed!) of the latest public SVN revision in the experimental branch running eyeMail, which is already receiving and sending emails:

What's coming on eyeOS 1.2, part I

eyeOS 1.1 included some features that were excluded from 1.0 release, and 1.2 is thought to include all those things that would make eyeOS very useful to any kind of user.

We would like to present some of the new features and improvements that eyeOS 1.2 will come with, and we'll start with the ability of running Java Applications, thanks to some new widgets (leadered by the new java applet widget) that will allow Java apps to run on eyeOS.

Bug Tracking Software, Wiki update and more

After some petitions in the #eyeos channel at FreeNode, we have finally installed a Bug Tracking Tool (based on the great software Amantis) to track, discuss and solve all bugs that appear in eyeOS. Please report any bug you see trought the new bugs.eyeos.org site.

The Wiki has also great changes! We have moved to Mediawiki and created a much more nice and organized Start Page. There are also some new interesting sections, like an Ideas and mockups page where designers can post their desings and developers can visit for ideas to work on. All the previous pages have been ported to the new wiki too.

Finally, we have added Finnish to the list of official languages available at the downloads page and soon in eyeSoft.

We hope you will like the changes. eyeOS is growing day after day. Thanks!

Installing languages in a nutshell

We have just added the certified languages to eyeSoft's default eyeOS repository.

This means that from now, installing a language pack to eyeOS is as simple as opening eyeSoft, updating the package list, selecting the language and clicking on Install... The system will do the work, and when it's done, the language will be installed and ready for use, to be activated from System preferences!

We'll be including new software and languages updates when available.

Yes, eyeOS is Web Software, but is Web Software the right way ;-)

We have just released eyeOS 1.1.0.1, which includes two small fixes on the Translations System, which was not working properly under Internet Explorer. As always, you can download the latest eyeOS and update packages from the downloads page.

eyeOS 1.1 Released

We're proud to announce (finally!) the release of eyeOS 1.1, which includes some new big functionalities as well as lots of fixed bugs:

Internationalization has been finally added to eyeOS 1.1. You can download languages from the downloads page.

eyeZip, a new app to extract the contents of zip files uploaded to the system. You can now finally upload dozens of files at the same time (packed in zip) and extract them when they're at eyeOS!

Import/Export functions in eyeContacts, allowing you to use your eyeContacts with the most extended standard format: vCard.

eyeDocs has been finally fixed completely for some versions of Internet Explorer.

eyeFiles can work with UTF special chars.

A small but powerful new app, editLink to edit visually eyeApps links (try it by going to Desktop trought eyeFiles and clicking an icon).

Dozens of bugs have been fixed!

Another important note is that we have updated the eyeOS License. We're now under the GNU GPL Version 3!

Thanks to everybody who has helped for this release. There will be new available languages soon, keep an eye on the downloads page.

eyeOS 1.1 delayed five days

After some hours of hard testing, we have decided to delay the eyeOS 1.1 announcement a few days. It will be probably released by the end of this week. The main reason is that we want to solve all the bugs that have been appearing in the eyeOS 1.0.x releases, to make eyeOS 1.1 widely stable and usable from a large number of web servers and browsers.

The good news are that it will include some new widgets that were thought for 1.1.1, and will finally be included in the 1.1 release. We'll be also publishing the translation tables soon so by the 1.1 release there will be as many languages as possible. The new translation system makes the languages independent from the releases, so it will be possible install and update languages by just intalling packages to the system.

We're so sorry about the delay, we really want to release it as soon as possible, but we prefer to delay it a few days and release it much more stable than release it today with some unsolved bugs. We hope you will understand this decission.

For those unpatient, you can always download the latest code from the SVN Server.

News in eyeOS websites

We have just updated the eyeOS website, making it XHTML valid, and adding some new parts to it, such as the new footer with direct links to the official communities, and some new sections like the brand new Development Section, which will list developement documents and useful links to get introduced into the eyeOS Development Community.

The eyeOS Wiki has been also adapted to eyeOS.org design and we have reorganized the Start page, creating new pages to localize groups of pages, like eyeOS Applications or the Widgets reference.

Please, report us any problem you see with the new websites, or ideas/sugestions about them. Thanks!

eyeOS 1.1 getting ready

We're proud to announce that next monday eyeOS 1.1 will be published, with the following features:

Languages support!

eyeZIP, to open/manage/uncompress zip files (users will be able to upload a zip file with tons of images, and uncompress it from eyeOS).

Widgets board, to be able to use widgets in another desktop layer, all together.

Import/export options for eyeContacts.

Dozens of bugs corrected.

We know that there is still much to do, so please keep adding new suggestions and reporting bugs to the forums , releases won't stop until eyeOS is greatly perfect!

Problems in eyeOS.info (old 0.9 version) solved

Some users reported that with the eyeOS 1.0 update in eyeOS.info, they had some problems accessing their account or files in eyeOS.info/old (eyeOS 0.9 server) accounts.

The problems should be solved now. Please, if you noticed some problems in your 0.9 account, please check it again, they're solved now.

eyeOS 1.0.3 + eyeSoft status update

We're proud to announce the new eyeOS 1.0.3, which adds special characters support in file names, corrects special characters problem in eyeBoard and adds a new security protection against attacks trought a malformed external app.

This means that if an application would allow someone to access your system trought, for example, an XSS attack, the system will detect that another IP is trying to modify your account and will end the session, warning you.

The new release and update packages can be found in the downloads page.

We're working hard on getting the first apps to be in eyeSoft prepared. During the next week, eyeSoft will show the first apps to be installed, specially ancient 0.9 apps that are being ported to eyeOS 1.0. Remember that eyeSoft can only be used by root, and can be launched from eyeControl or via eyeLaunch app.

With the new eyeSoft porting system, installing new apps into an eyeOS system is as easy as select the app from eyeSoft (after clicking Update button to download automatically the last apps list from the eyeOS repository), click to install and the system will download it, extract it, install it, and if necessary, create new file associations in eyeFiles, automatically.

Finally, we want to thank (again ;-)) the whole eyeOS community, who is helping us to make eyeOS much more stable by reporting bugs trought the eyeOS Forums.

We'll be soon releasing information about new eyeOS 1.1 which will include the translation system to allow eyeOS be translated again and some other new cool stuff.

eyeOS 1.0.2 released!

We're proud to announce the release of eyeOS 1.0.2, which introduces dozens of bugs corrected and some new applications and features:

New apps for all users:

eyeMp3, which automatically opens when an user opens a .mp3 and plays it.

New eyeRSS, with full support of RSS 0.91, RSS 2.0 and Atom, and dialogs to save new feeds and remove/refresh feeds.

New apps for Root:

eyeSoft, the first ports based software installation system from the Web. With eyeSoft you can install new applications to your eyeOS system without leaving eyeOS: Just choose the application/utility to install, and eyeSoft will download, extract and install it for you. You only have to wait for eyeSoft to finish the installation process, just like apt-get or portage systems for Linux. Note that only Root can run eyeSoft.

eyeInstaller, which automatically opens when ROOT opens a .eyePackage and installs it.

Desk improvements:

eyeDesk shows new folders / files created and removes files deleted automatically, without need to re-login.

eyeDesk now saves icons positions.

eyeDesk saves the position of the apps who allow savePosition in their configuration.

Applications improvements:

eyeContacts and eyeProcess are now using the new sortable table widget.

Calendar updated with various bug fixes.

Technical improvements:

New close method in Window class.
Fixed clear method in Window class, so it empties _Content and not the full Window.

Added method to send messages from PHP in eyex.

Sortable Table widget fixed so its dynamic and doesn't need to be reloaded for add/remvoe a row.

Support for short URLs.

Added raw function in eyeURL to download files.

eyeDesk finally supports service calls.

Added setXMLfile in eyeXML, the opposite of getXMLfile.

General improvements:

eyeOS loading time greatly reduced!

New tinier compression library, adapted to eyeOS.

Bugs fixed:

Fixed eyeDialog bug in concatenation.

Fixed bug in eyeGroups reported at forums (topic ID 1297).

Fixed eyeXML of various bugs found.

Fixed problems with charsets in Label widget.

Fixed restore/empty functions in trash when running on PHP4.

eyeOS 1.0.1 Released + Thanks

Two days after the 1.0 release, we're proud to announce the new eyeOS 1.0.1, which solves lots of small bugs that have been reported since the release.

The main features and bugs corrected are:

New eyeBoard, the bulletin board app for eyeOS

New Public folder creation option to disable the creation of new folders in the Public directory

eyeImages fixed when opening an image from a Public dir

Missing apps icons for Applications menu added

Installation script improved to support many more configurations

Desktop showing files placed in Home/Desktop correctly

None of the bugs is security-related, so the update is not urgent, but we recommend it to everybody since it includes fixes that make eyeOS better looking.

From this release, we'll be publishing two packages, a new installation package and an update package for updating an existent eyeOS server to the new version without loosing users, files or configurations.

You can download the new version from the downloads page or use it directly from the public server.

We want to give special thanks to Richard Macmanus, who published the first eyeOS 1.0 review and got into the front page of digg.com, and everybody who has been helping us to improve the project reporting bugs from the Forums, making suggestions or sending us emails about eyeOS 1.0.

Introducing eyeOS 1.0

After two years of unstopped development, and six month of continued work for eyeOS 1.0 with a maximized team, we're proud to announce the release of eyeOS 1.0.

Starting from the installer, which now uncompresses the whole eyeOS system from a package and creates a randomized directory to place eyeOS in, so access directly from the browser is impossible -even with the randomized name, since access from outside is denied by default-, everything in the new eyeOS has been redesigned and rewritten, thinking in a really scalable web Operating System and platform to develop web applications on.

The new eyeOS incorporates lots of new utilities and some new base applications completely renewed, like eyeFiles and eyeCalendar. With the new eyeFiles, you can manage your files by opening as many instances of eyeFiles as you want and working with your data like if you were in your traditional Operating System. From simple actions like copying and pasting over multiple instances to powerful actions like downloading full directories as zip files.

The way to make new applications has been redesigned too. Making an app for eyeOS 1.0 is as simple as joining "widgets" (from an imagebox to a sortable table) and creating functions for them, just like any other IDE, but for creating Web Applications!. For example, a rich word processor with dialogs for opening / saving files can be done in less than 30 lines.

With this, eyeOS 1.0 introduces a revolutionary new way of creating web applications, making the programmer forget AJAX, HTML, user and processes management, global security and many other thinks to take care on when you're working on a new Web Application from scratch.

Finally, the internal part of eyeOS has been also redesigned, and now bases its power on a microkernel that loads services and libaries when needed for each user, controlling each action trought a processes table, which can be acceded from an application (eyeProcess).

After some months of hard development, we're proud to announce the main eyeOS 1.0 characteristics:

Evolution? No, Revolution.

eyeOS 1.0 introduces a new concept of Operating System. Not thought as the evolution of eyeOS 0.9, but as the revolution of the 0.x eyeOS series. Based on the design of a modern operating system, bases its power on a microkernel, which loads services, libraries, widgets (forms), and on the top of it all, applications. The only difference between eyeOS 1.0 and any other traditional operating system is that you can run eyeOS from a web browser.

Applications development made simple.

Creating an application for eyeOS 1.0 is as simple as opening eyeDesigner, the integrated development environment, design it visually and join the widgets to the desired functions. Not writting a single line of Javascript/AJAX. Not writting a single line of HTML. The system will.

New desktop. Better. Faster.

The new desktop introduces groups for applications, a menu Bar for the common system actions, and a wide space for your icons. The new desktop also introduces visual effects for some common actions, which make the usage of the system much more comfortable. There are no limits anymore: Your desktop is yours, and you can do what you want with it!

Real Scalability.

Do you need eyeOS to connect with a very specific database developed for your business? Do you need eyeOS to be used from a very specific device you bought in your last trip to Japan which does not have a web browser but an open specification to recieve data? Just develop a new service with the DB/device specification and eyeOS will load and allow you use it in the next boot.

Real multitasking.

Can't close an app? Would you like to close all of them quickly? Just open the real process manager and stop all processes you need. Why real? Because the process manager just loads the list of apps from your process table, which is created in every session you open.

eyePorts, the new eyeApps.

Forget downloading apps from a website and uploading them to your eyeOS. Just open eyePorts application, and it will download the latest list of all available eyeOS applications from the repositories and allow you download and install the apps you want, automatically. As simple as select the apps you want and wait while they're being downloaded and intalled.

More Stable. More Secure.

With the security in mind, eyeOS 1.0 has been designed from the scratch to provide the most stable system. With only one .PHP file, all other files have been renamed with .eyecode extension and loaded dinamically by the system when needed. With a new and fresh install process, the eyeOS root directory will be hidden into a randomly generated directory, and everyting inside that directory will be loaded trought an script, the only one who will know the real path. But wait, this is the top of the security iceberg designed for eyeOS 1.0.

Open Source.

Don't trust us when we say it's secure. Don't trust us when we say it's stable. Don't trust us. Just download it, install it in your server and see it yourself. eyeOS 1.0 is Open Source.

In the middle of the hard work for eyeOS 1.0, we got surprised when we received some mails congragulating us for the 100.000 registered users in the eyeOS Public Server.

We would like to take a brief moment to thank everybody who has registered in eyeOS.info or downloaded and used eyeOS, to everybody who has reported a bug or suggested a new feature, translated eyeOS to more and more languages, created a new community, helped other users in the eyeOS Forums and finally, to everybody who has participated in any way in the eyeOS project since it was started.

eyeOS Hispano.com released

We're proud to announce the recently opened eyeOS Spanish community, called eyeOS Hispano. Created and moderated by David Comuñas, it will be the central point for spanish people who want to discover eyeOS in Spanish language.

There is also available community for catalan users, that can be accessed at eyeOS.cat. Enjoy them!

eyeOS 0.9.3-5 Released / New eyeApps.org

We have just released eyeOS 0.9.3-5, which includes two main improvements: The first one, focused into user security, improves the way eyeHome manages the files. The new system allows all files to be uploaded with no restrictions and uses the eyeOS XML FileSystem to recognize it's author, date of upload and file name.

The second improvement is the elimination of the ancient eyeTrash (which was not updated since 0.8.x versions of eyeOS). The new system uses eyeHome as file explorer for the trash, displaying "Trash" in the Sites list. All actions have been moved to eyeHome Actions bar and the translations of eyeTrash have been merged to eyeHome too. The Trash icon has been updated to use this new system.

Some other small bugs have been also solved. You can download the last version from the downloads page.

Important Note: Some external apps from eyeApps.org will need to be updated if you're using them. You can read the notice and download the last version of those apps (4 in total) from eyeApps Website, which has been restyled recently, with some new apps, like eyePDF, a PDF Viewer for eyeOS.

eyeOS 0.9.3-4 Released + Webmail eyeApp

We're proud to announce the release of the new eyeOS 0.9.3-4, which fixes some bugs found on 0.9.3. You can download it from the downloads section. MicroServer and MiniServer versions will be updated soon.

We have also uploaded the first eyeApp for checking POP3/IMAP accounts, and being able to send mails with attachments, manage contacts and manage multiple accounts. A full mail system inside eyeOS! You can use it from the Public Server or download and install it to your eyeOS server from the eyeApps website, from the Internet section!

MicroServer Updated

Björn Ahrens, MicroServer creator has released a new version of MicroServer, 0.5.1c, which includes the latest version of eyeOS and the new version of the PHP interpreter (5.2).

For those who don't know what MicroServer is, it's a super-fast and small server with eyeOS bundled, which will allow anyone with a Windows 98SE, Me, 2000 or XP have it's own eyeOS server with any requirements other than the Windows installation: Just install and enjoy!

It's main difference with eyeOS miniServer is than while miniServer is a full featured "suite" with Apache2 + PHP + eyeOS + Firefox with includes like server monitoring, microServer is thought for a small and fast eyeOS server (It's installation executable is about 3MB!).

eyeOS 0.9.3 released

We're proud to announce the new version 0.9.3 of eyeOS. It includes an updated default theme, which loads faster and adds full support for Internet Explorer 7. The bubbles from eyeHome and eyeEdit have been adapted to the new theme, and the Application Manager has now a Viewer with all apps ordered by categories.

eyeEdit (eyeOS' word processor) has been also updated with the new version of it's core. Some bugs in eyePhones and eyeMessages regarding the textareas under Internet Explorer have been fixed too.

New developers + eyeOS AJAX kernel project

We're proud to announce that the eyeOS Developers Community has grown with the inclusion of three new members:

Lars Daniel Forseth and Steffen Thaldorf study Applied Computer Science at the University of Cooperative Education in Stuttgart / Germany and have decided to do a thesis on eyeOS, working on the next step of the kernel. They will be working on the thesis from October 2006 to May 2007, and will focus their work on developing a full AJAX based kernel for eyeOS.

Also, we have a new member who started as an expert security researcher, but has moved to the main developement of the system and is working actually on new features for the next releases 0.9.3 and 0.9.4, Jose Carlos Norte.

The three complete the developers community with Lars Knickrehm (creator of eyeOS German Community), Tristan Siebers (creator of eyeOS Nederland community and MiniServer) and Björn Ahrens (creator of microServer).

So thanks a lot to all you (and the rest of the community who contributes writting documentation, translating, testing and designing!). We'll be posting about the process of all this work.

eyeOS 0.9.2 released: eyeOS Mobile

We're proud to announce the new version of eyeOS, 0.9.2, which includes some bug fixes and a new feature designed to take the files stored in eyeHome (the eyeOS' file manager) to everywhere: the eyeOS Mobile platform.

With the new version, eyeOS incorporates now a Mobile Access to it, that allows viewing, downloading and uploading files from any cell phone with a web browser. It's accessible from a file called "m.php" in the root of eyeOS. As always, you can download the new version from the eyeOS Downloads page.

If you have an account in the official eyeOS Free Server, you can test the new Mobile eyeOS from eyeOS.mobi from a mobile phone or desktop web browser.

Hello Italia, and we're six!

With the recent eyeOS Italian Official Community (avilable at eyeOS.it, and based on a stripped down eyeOS system) there are now six eyeOS communities running arround the world: English, German, Nederland, French, Swiss and the new Italian.

So it's a good moment to say thanks to all the users who are creating localized communities of eyeOS arround the world, and those who are participating in them. eyeOS is getting bigger and bigger, and we have reached 70,000 registered users in eyeOS.info server.

New Demo Server of eyeOS 0.9.1

We have just published a Live Demo of eyeOS, for testing it before installing a new server or creating an account into an existent one. The demo does not require login or registration, and shows a default desktop with all the applications.

eyeOS 0.9.1 released!

We are proud to announce the new 0.9.1 version of eyeOS, which incorporates important improvements over 0.9.x versions and some important bugs solved.

The improvements include the new file sharing in eyeHome: With two tabs (Private files and Public diretory), users can manage their private files and copy files easily to the public directory, where all users in that system will be able to see and manage them.

The 0.9.1 version also includes a very important core update, the new user directory structure. The accounts directory has been moved to a new organization system, supporting over 400 milion users. Upgrading is also simple, and the users are moved "on the fly" to the new structure when they log in into the system.

All the external applications should work correctly, but we recommend to update two apps when upgrading to 0.9.1: Maps.eyeapp and eyeAmp.eyeapp, because the ancient versions used a non-official way of handling directories, and could cause problems with the new structure.

Finally, this release also fixes two XSS security bugs, so we recommend all users to upgrade to this new version ir order to have the best security. This two bugs were discovered by Jose Carlos Norte, who is a new eyeOS developer.

eyeOS Websites Refreshed

We have just updated the look of our main homepage and the login page from the free eyeOS server. With the new websites, all information has been centralized, trying to organize all the parts of the project and making them accessible from anywhere inside the website, forums or login page from eyeOS.info.

We're also preparing the new developer netork, based on the Wiki format. As talked in the forums some time ago, most of the developement organization will be done inside eyeOS.

With the new websites, we have also released eyeOS 0.9.0-5, solving some small bugs and introducing the translated login page, present in eyeOS.info since some weeks ago. The new version can be downloaded from the downloads page.

New translation files

Sometimes a small thing waits a long time before it's started. This is the case of the translation of the eyeOS login page, seen by thousands of people of different countries every day, and only en english (even when eyeOS is translated to many different languages).

We have started with the translations of Spanish and Catalan. If you can write in different language, please contribute with it! The translations page is located at this eyeOS wiki page.

eyeOS v0.9 "IRIS" released

After some months development, we're proud to announce the new 0.9.0 version of eyeOS, known as "IRIS".

With the new version, we've also published the new eyeOS web network, and updated eyeOS.info service.

The new eyeOS IRIS introduces many new features:

-New default desktop and login system, completely re-designed.
-New core, much more AJAXED with improvements in velocity.
-New Application Configuration system, for customizing some parameters of the apps, in AJAX.
-New Bubble system for managing some application options much more quickly
-New eyeHome, with a real FileSystem (with unlimited subdirectories)

Maps eyeApp!

We're proud to announce a new application for eyeOS: Maps.

With this new app, based on the great software Google Maps, searching geolocations and saving/viewing them as Bookmarks can be entirely done from eyeOS. Have your location bookmarks with you with eyeOS+Maps!

This new app can be found in the Application Manager.

New Gallery app!

We're glad to publish the new Gallery app, for creating photo galleries (with image preview), watching them with the slideshow function and organizing all the photos we have in the Home folder. Like all the apps, can be found in the Application Manager.

All the eyeOS team are working very hard for the new system, which will come in a few weeks with many improvements. Stay tuned!

eyeOS: the next steps

We have reached a point where eyeOS is growing very fast and we need to get a complete new organization method for maintaining, using and developing eyeOS. For this reason, we're working very hard, preparing the next step for eyeOS community.
The new eyeOS version
The first update will come in the new eyeOS 0.8.16. We will be revising the apps with a common structure. All apps will follow the same internal structure, will be documented and will have a new system to allow for customizing parameters.
The new kernel will have many improvements:

It will come with the user registration option (like in eyeOS.info), that will be enabled and disabled by superuser. This new registration method can optionally require email verification.

A new optional statistics gathering system which can permit the analysis of eyeOS usage.

A new system function to allow apps to provide user cutomisable parameters. Each app having such parameters will have a new button which opens a configuration panel. The definition of the parameters will be in the properties xml file, and the user values will be saved in the per user application file. EyeCalendar will be the first app to make use of this feature

Many cleanups and bug corrections have also been done, and a bigger number of available languages will be implemented by default.

The new eyeOS websites
We also intend to revise completely the eyeOS.org website and all it's services. With the new structure, the eyeOS.org website will be more focused on the end user (with tutorials, reviews, tips and tricks, featured themes and apps, etc.).
The new developer area
A completely new developer area. will be created from scratch. This new area will be divided in two parts: The documentation part, where users interested in join the development team should read, with much information about eyeOS' core and applications, articles explaining how to write good applications for the system, an expanded API documentation, etc.
And the important new part: the new developer network will be based on eyeOS: There will be a new app for maintaining discussions and pages (like actual forums and wiki systems), an app for sending new files (with eyeOS code), and automatic generation of nightly builds with the last eyeOS running in the developers system.

Each developer will be able to send modifications, improvements and bug fixes to the public directory, and after acceptance, they will be made available in the nightly builds, which all developers can download.
After a reasonable period of improvements and bug fixes, we will release a new eyeOS version and update the community system (eyeOS.info).
Summary
With the new eyeOS structure, we will have two servers running (the "big" server for the end-users, with the last stable eyeOS, and the developers server with the last betas of eyeOS).
We will publish more information about how will be releases named, and the system managed.

Jabber IM and 3gp Videos!

We have just uploaded two new apps to eyeOS.info, a Jabber Client for connecting and chatting with Jabber servers and a 3GP video player, for playing the 3GP videos avaliable in the Home directory.
The two new apps can be found at the Application Manager.

We are working for the next version of eyeOS, which will include many small improvements in all applications and more system features for customizing the apps and the desktop.

Reading RSS feeds from eyeOS

We have now twenty thousand reasons to work for eyeOS! Thanks to everybody who is making possible all this. The community is growing as fast as eyeOS grows day after day.

We have uploaded the new RSS reader. Like all other apps, can be launched from the Application Manager, and added into the main dock by clicking on "Manage Apps" and choosing it.

There will be improvements in the way users are registered and new social apps soon. Stay tuned!

New eyeCalendar!

We have just uploaded the new eyeCalendar and eyeNav! Our new eyeCalendar is full AJAX-driven, provides a much faster user experience and new features, such as choosing the first day of the week (by clicking on the day name). We recommend you to try it!

Also, we have updated eyeNav, that now orders the links by it's Karma, not by date like it's first collaborative version.

We're working on implementing all new translations. In our next update (with the new eyeOS version) there will be 28 different languages avaliable in eyeOS!

We have just updated eyeNav with a new system for collaborative linking. Submit your fauvorite webs and allow other users vote for that links!

We have also updated the default window borders. The new ones should load much faster.

Voice in eyeOS!

After some weeks talking with BarOfVoices, we have finally integrated a new voice service in eyeOS. The process has been divided in two steps:

The first one, which is completed, is to integrate a Public voice Board inside eyeBoard, where everyone can leave messages and listen other people messages. The second step will be to integrate BarOfVoices to all user accounts, so users will be able to send voice messages to other users. We will also publish soon instructions for integrating this service into any eyeOS server.

We are working for new apps to increase the social factor of eyeOS: Apps for meet other people in the community, to create specific Boards and join other users boards, etc. Also, the work for eyeOS 1.0 never stops...

Stick a note, search media!

We have just added three new apps in eyeOS.info. The first one, eyeSticky, adds an editable note in the deskop, which can be changed always and is saved automatically thanks to AJAX technology.

We have also two new apps for searching videos and images through eyeOS (thanks to RSS) in YouTube and Flickr. Just insert keywords and the thumbnails of the first results will appear!

All this apps, with the improved PublicChat can be found in the Apps directory -the orange icon in the right of the bar-. Thanks to everybody, eyeOS is growing day after day!

eyeOS Tips & Tricks

eyeOS has many features which are sometimes not obvious to the new user and even not so new user. We would like to ask you to submit your tricks and tips for eyeOS users. We will publish the best ones in eyeOS.info!

Here are a few tips to get you started:

Automatically launching an app each time you log in:
In the Application Manager, select Manage Apps and enter ( ) in the text box of the apps that want to launch.

Checking eyeBoard/eyeMessages:
If you provide an auto load parameter of (check) for eyeBoard or eyeMessages in the AppManager, they will start only if there are new messages since you last checked them.

Starting eyeNav at a different URL:
In App Manager, select Manage Apps and enter the full URL of the startup page between parentheses in the text box for eyeNAV. e.g (http://google.org) Don't forget to begin it with http://!

Expanding Public Documents:
Public documents are those that can be viewed and changed by all users. They are available next to the private document list in eyeEdit. Ask for help, meet people, or expand the Whish list for
eyeOS.

Refreshing our look

We have just updated the default eyeOS theme! Hope you will like it! We have also uploaded a new theme called "animus". For trying it, just go to eyeOptions and select it! This new theme was made by a company called AnimusMedia for eyeOS.

We are working very hard for the new eyeOS version, with a completely new design, lots of improvements and new apps. Finally, we have just reached the 7000 users. Thanks to everybody!

Remember that you can use eyeMessages to send messages to other users in the server. At this time, there are almost 6,000 users in this server alone ... so ask your friends for their username and start exchanging messages from within eyeOS! You can also publish people you want to meet in eyeBoard!

In first place, thanks to everybody. This is amazing. We are five thousand users here, and there are a lot of plans to make this community grow and grow! Anybody who would like to see something special inside eyeOS can contact us at team@eyeos.org.

Our next big thing will be a new app for creating groups and manage them inside eyeOS.info: Anime, Cars, A small town group... Everybody will be able to subscribe to the groups, see the other members inside it, talk with them and write in a group public board!
